Thu, Nov 16, 3:30pm Matt Szczesny (Boston Univ.) The Langlands program: from arithmetic to conformal field theory This will be a very elementary attempt to trace the sequence of analogies that lead from the Langlands program for global fields to the geometric formulation given by A. Beilinson and V. Drinfeld. I will attempt to explain the formulation of the latter in the language of conformal field theory, and illustrate the abelian case (geometric abelian class field theory).

Jim Walsh ([email protected]) specializes in dynamical systems, having earned a Ph.D. from Boston University under the direction of G.R. Hall in 1991. His research interests increasingly center on applied dynamical systems and mathematical modeling. He is fortunate to have had the opportunity to spend a recent sabbatical at the University of Minnesota, participating in Richard McGehee’s semin...

Barry used to visit Israel regularly. He always set up base at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem and came for a day or two to give a seminar at the Technion. Barry made his itinerary early, which meant that I had plenty of time to get ready for his visit, which really meant that I had plenty of time to worry what worthwhile observation I had to impress Barry with. Barry’s visits were like my a...
